Keep development cooperation, suspend Burundi partnership
The SPD wants to maintain and strengthen the state's development cooperation, relying on existing structures. The government-level partnership with Burundi would be suspended because of serious human rights violations.
The SPD wants to keep helping poorer countries. The state should strengthen this work. But the partnership with Burundi's government will pause. The reason is serious human rights violations.
The work would be carried by the Stiftung Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (SEZ) and the umbrella association DEAB, which represents more than 400 groups. Volunteer engagement and educational work at home, such as global learning, would continue to be supported. The SPD wants to review existing country partnerships for their usefulness. Civil society projects in Burundi under the SEZ umbrella may continue.
