Raise the number of social housing units to 5,000
The SPD wants Saarland to have 5,000 social housing units again by 2027 and more homes for people on low and middle incomes. It plans a state housing promotion law, a redesigned subsidy scheme and an alliance for affordable housing.
Saarland has only a few social housing units left. The SPD wants 5,000 of them again by 2027. A new law is planned for this. The SPD also wants to fight empty houses and apartments.
According to the program, there were more than 5,000 rent-controlled subsidized apartments in 2005 and only a few hundred today. A Saarland housing promotion law is to make needs and goals transparent, and subsidies are to make new construction and renovation worthwhile. An alliance would bring together the state, municipalities, the housing and construction industry, tenant associations, welfare organizations and chambers, including on sustainable building and timber as a material. Against vacancy, the SPD plans monitoring, cheaper building land provided by public bodies and use of the state development plan. Housing cooperatives are to get more advice and funding, and municipalities should be able to borrow for housing construction.
