Support villages and rural areas
The SPD wants to strengthen villages with more funding, an additional LEADER region and digital infrastructure. The sharply higher funds available from 2023 are to be drawn down in full, with the state raising its own share to do so.
Almost half of the people in Saarland live in rural areas. The SPD wants to support villages more. There will be more money for local projects. Meeting places and shared offices will be set up. Volunteer work will be strengthened.
LEADER is an EU funding program for rural regions; the four existing regions are to get more money and a fifth is to be added. According to the platform, Saarland will have more than twice as much rural funding from 2023 as before. The money is to upgrade town centers, create meeting spaces, support the regional economy and expand infrastructure. Community meeting places remain a funding priority, and volunteer work is to be strengthened. Co-working spaces with good digital connections are meant to allow people to work close to home.
