Flexible retirement age and a basic pension
The FDP wants to make the retirement age more flexible so that people can decide for themselves how long they work. To fight old-age poverty, it backs the nationwide introduction of a "Basis-Rente" (basic pension).
The FDP wants people to decide for themselves when to retire. Those who want to work longer should be allowed to. Part-time work in old age should not hurt the pension. A basic pension should help against poverty in old age.
The FDP wants part-time work to have no negative effect on pensions. Companies that promote part-time work for older employees should get targeted support. The platform justifies the basic pension by saying that people who worked all their lives should be able to live on their income in old age. The FDP also calls for prices of cultural and everyday services to be continually adjusted to seniors' needs so that no one is excluded for financial reasons.

„Wer sich auch im fortgeschrittenen Alter noch leistungsfähig fühlt und weiterarbeiten möchte, der soll auch die Chance dazu bekommen. Dazu wollen wir das Renteneintrittsalter flexibler gestalten.“Translation: Anyone who still feels capable at an advanced age and wants to keep working should get the chance to do so. To that end, we want to make the retirement age more flexible.

A more flexible retirement age relies on individual choice, while a basic pension and support for part-time work in old age mean additional state benefits, so the two directions balance out.
